Finish the Picture Self-Portrait
In this project, we had to take ourselves a picture, roughly cut it in half, and then draw the other half using pencil and a smudger. The task was to copy the other half as best as we could using the piece of the picture we had cut, and try to make it look as realistic as possible so that we achieved a sense of continuity between one side and the other. With the smudger, I added the finishing touches and helped to give it the smoothness that one finds in a normal photograph.
The hardest part of this project was getiing the right amount of shade to the other half of the face; I already knew where the shades had to go, but the overall brightness of the photograph wasn't very bright. In order to make it match perfectly, I'd had to first match the tone of the darkest shadows on both sides. This would have taken more time than what we had available, and I've never been that much of a perfectionist, so I just used lighter tones on the other half. That said, I think the end result does have continuity, and yet I like how one side can be clearly identified from the other.
My Own Island: "Techi-Utopia"
This project is the representation of my very own island, with places that are made to represent people, places, events or ideas meaningful to me. In order to decide what would go into the island, where and in what shape, I made a brainstorm and then a draft. The end result has places like:
The part I enjoyed the most about this project was painting the final product with
watercolors. The island has no shadow, and this helps to give each landmark the importance they need by making them clearly identifiable. The end result is supposed to tell people about myself, so that the observer can get to know me through the picture.
- The E. Mountains, which represent my family
- Guitar Jungle, which, along with the compass at the bottom left corner, represent my love for music
- Hidden Land, which is a place to be discovered -- it represents my future
- Chopstick forest, which represent my favorite food: sushi
- Naissance Archipelago, which represent my birth (and French, which I was learning at that time)

Using Different Techniques:
This project is a mix of everything: different techniques, shapes and colors where used to create this abstract piece. The shapes where made in no particular order, nor where the colors chosen to fit a pattern. The different textures and depths given by the different coloring techniques do make it interesting to observe, though.
While making it, we had to use three different technique used to blend colors into one another: criss-crossing, dotting, and painting over ont color ewith another color. For the first two, I used markers; the latter was made with color pencils to make the change smooth. Some colors blend into the middle, while others blend to the sides. this project was simply about that, using the techniques we had learned to make something that, in the very least, is interesting to watch.
